Reminiscent of the sleazy, fearmongering Daisy ad that made Goldwater lose in a landslide, this toe-tagged baby implies that if the broke-ass State of California decides to re-allocate Prop 10 money they're murdering kids. The ad comes from The Child Abuse Prevention Center who can't seem to realize that their agency is going to have to take budget cuts like everybody else. Didn't The Obama himself say we were going to have to make sacrifices? But like any special interest group that knows what's best to do with your money, they speak from the vantage point of supreme moral authority. From SFGate:
Sheila Boxley, president and CEO of the Sacramento County organization, said the campaign is not too provocative. Some historical context of Prop. 10 is necessary to understand why the people who put out this ad are nanny-state creeps. In 1998, a host of Hollywood busybodies (led by Rob "Meathead" Reiner") rode a wave of anti-smoking sentiment sweeping the nation to get a proposition on the California ballot (Prop 10), which eventually passed. It increased the tax on cigarettes 50 cents a pack to fund a bunch of "Please Think of the Children!" type bureaucracies run by Rob Reiner's friends who didn't know what the fuck they were doing with all this no-accountability money.
"Quite frankly, I believe that will be the impact," she said. "The net outcome is certainly the potential of children dying."
These elitists never want to tax the vices of the rich (puffy director pants, Tofurkey at Whole Foods, and whatever the fuck else these people are into) but go after smoking (mostly a working class addiction) and now their ilk on the east coast have their sights on pop for the rest of the country (ambrosia for red state types). So, just like the funding of S-Chip by cigarette excise taxes, the yellow-teethed grandma puffing away on Newport 100s is now the cash cow for a host of child services and I guess is not a "baby killer". So that's the political conundrum you get when you have a state government taking money from one group of people and giving it another under the guise of regulating human behavior: dead baby ads.

Don't forget the oversize sunglasses (to go along with the puffy director pants.)
We are screwed in CA either way, frankly.
If you vote for this, you hate children. You don't hate children, do you?
MezzoSF,
Well it pisses me off since I used to be a Californian and I really liked the place. People always talk about CA sinking into the ocean from an earthquake, but it appears they sank themselves.
I hear you, Nixon - I have lived here for just about 8 years now - and have seen a lot of change over the course of those years. Some for the better, but a fair piece for the worse. Lots of shady politics/politicians, wasted money and the like. It's frustrating to love a place (and I love it here) and yet be disappointed time and again. And right now things - as they are in so many places - are really bad. I can only hope and pray that we will hit the bottom of all of this soon - and then we can push off and start in on the upswing. But that might be a loooong time from now.
Well that might be a while. CA gets more money from Uncle Sugar than their tax base...that's kind of messed up.
