Not much to say. It's all very sad. And I think that sadness is captured pretty well in this image that was part of an MSNBC slideshow.
People in the military are accustomed to mentally preparing for danger and carnage abroad, but you just never really expect it on the homefront. I'm not going to speculate here, since the facts are still coming in, but Noah Shachtman has some eye-popping statements that the shooter made previously. And I'm a bit surprised that David Neiwert is criticizing "wingnuts" for being so judgmental, because I'm sure if it was a white guy, he would've talked about how Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin made him do it, which Crooks and Liars has been known to do.
The guys at This Ain't Hell got a hold of his Officer Record if you are interested.

egads. I am just...shocked...and saddened by the whole thing. This should NOT be something troops have to be put through HERE of all places.
It does not matter what color his skin, his religion, etc - who knows why the Timothy McVeighs or the Nidal Hasans of this world do the things they do - crazienss.
In defense of David, you do remember Oklahoma City, don't you? First report - and this was in 1995 - was that it was a Muslim perpetrator. And I don't think this was an attack against Faux, all the networks were making shit up before the facts were in.
But this is a tragic story - Army officer, not deployed, goes wacko in one of the largest CONUS bases. Not what anyone would have expected, but at the same time, why didn't someone weed this guy out instead of promoting him a year ago?
In defense of Neiwert? Isn’t he the same prick face who was screaming “Glenn Beck and Michelle Bachman were responsible” over the death (and what looks increasingly to be a suicide) of census taker Bill Starkman?
Its doesn’t take clairvoyance to put this guys name and his motivation together.
Regardless of why he did it, this just fucking sucks. You do expect this in a combat zone, you don’t expect this kind of shit at home from one of your own.
His ORB state No-Reli-Pref...I thought he was a dirty muslim.
They should have poured acid in his wounds and let him bleed out. I would NOT have rendered first aid to that asshole. No way.
I was just a pizzafaced freshman in high school at the time of McVeigh, but I do remember that the media jumped the gun. But, I agree with you that events like this shouldn't be made to make broad generalizations about your political enemies (which is David Neiwert's schtick). I understand he's your co-blogger at your new C&L gig, but I just despise the obscene double standard.
Telegraph has a pretty in-depth article on this psycho.
The Horrible Incident at Fort Hood is unquestionably a Terrorist Attack.
Hasan is a murderous killer and after his trial and conviction, his execution by firing squad or hanging needs to be done the same day.
Sgt. Kimberly Munley deserves the Medal of Honor. I don't care if she's never served in the armed forces her actions at great risk to her own life are MoH worthy and a special dispensation needs to be made for her actions.
This one hit close to home. My cousin's unit is based at Ft. Hood. The media is trying to make a link with combat stress even though the guy never was deployed.

That's fact, Not what anyone would have expected, but at the same time, why didn't someone weed this guy out instead of promoting him a year ago?
